It may be time to consider assisted living if a loved one has difficulty: managing medications, handling daily activities like bathing, cooking or cleaning, and navigating their home safely. Assisted living communities can provide a safe environment where they will have the support they need.

Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance plans typically do not cover assisted living costs. In Virginia, and in select states, Medicaid programs or waivers may help cover certain personal care and medical support services. Long-term care insurance and the VA may cover assisted living depending on the policy. The VA may also cover long-term care in some cases. It is best to explore all of your options. Most assisted living communities offer therapeutic exercise and wellness programs, social events and outings, educational and enrichment programs, religious or spiritual services and daily activities like game time and arts and crafts.

It’s important to tour the community in person, if possible. Ask the staff about activities, meal plans, support services and therapy and wellness offerings on-site. While you’re touring, consider speaking with a current resident to get their perspective on the community or have a meal in the dining room to gain additional insight firsthand.
